Going Beyond "Natural"

The USDA's Definition of "Natural"

The USDA defines “natural” as “minimally processed – no artificial ingredients”.  This definition does not address animal raising practices or the use of hormones or antibiotics.  Unfortunately, many  “natural” companies today utilize antibiotic withdrawal programs, which means that the animals are given antibiotics at some point during their lives, but are taken off them in time for the meat to test negative.  Even though these animals were given antibiotics the package can contain the “no antibiotic” claim.

What "Natural" Means to Niman Ranch

We believe that to be authentically natural you must go beyond the USDA’s definition.  That’s why our animals are raised humanely and sustainably, fed a strictly vegetarian diet and never given hormones or antibiotics – ever!  Be sure to look for “never-ever” on the label or the Niman Ranch logo!

  • Never given hormones or antibiotics - EVER!
