Farmer in Idaho
We take care of the land so it takes care of us.
Elias Jaca and his wife, Inez, are both fourth generation ranchers and descendants of immigrants from the Basque region of Europe. They strongly believe in taking care of the land so it takes care of them. Their 2,000 cattle are grazed on more than eighty thousand acres of federal, state and private land. In the winter months, they spread home-grown feed across their winter pastures. They practice crop rotation to ensure proper land management and each summer drive their cattle to mountain feeding grounds, allowing the winter pastures to rest.
